The first rumors about the possible release of video card radeon HD 2900 Pro appeared at the beginning of May. It was assumed that this video card will be based on new chip RV670, released on 65 nm technical process. But such video card appeared in September. .
AMD introduced clarity in the announcement Of radeon HD 2900 Pro. As a result the card was announced for 249 US dollars . Actually the Radeon HD 2900 Pro is the precise copy Of radeon HD 2900 XT with understated frequencies! .
In the same price segment AMD will announces soon the video card radeon HD 2950 on base of new chip RV670, produced on TSMC 55 nm technological process and, naturally Radeon HD 2900 Pro will interfere with new video cards. For this reason, and also due to the low number of graphic processors HD 2900 XT the life cycle of this card will be limited to one block.

Video card grew noticeably with insignificant temperature increase .
2. HIS radeon HD 2600 XT iSilenceIII 256 Mb and HIS radeon HD 2600 XT iceQ turbo 256 Mb review :
In today\'s article we have immediately two video card class radeon HD 2600 XT . Let us note that the cost of HD 2600 XT video card is approximately equal or even just lower than the recommended price of Radeon HD 2900 Pro, and crossfire technology allow to use both video card simultaneously, raising thus the productivity of graphic system . Therefore we decided to include in the tests this video card. Furthermore, HIS company released two interesting products in this price segment.
Both video card are supplied in boxes with practically identical size. :
On the left is located the HIS radeon HD 2600 XT iSilenceIII 256 Mb, and in the right we have the HIS radeon HD 2600 XT iceQ turbo 256 Mb. On face sides of both packing\'s are noted the key special video card features . For the first these are the noiseless cooling system, while for the second we have the cooling system iceQ and the fairly overstated frequencies.

There is no need for detailed comparison , even release week coincides. But it is necessary to add that the Turbo version from HIS GPU functions at frequency 830 MHz instead of 800 MHz . while HIS radeon HD 2600 XT iceQ turbo video memory functions at 1908 MHz, which is500 MHz higher than the default rating! In this case, the case noise level did not exceed 34 dB. Thus it is possible to say that the max acceptable noise level is with the rotation frequency witch do not exceed 2100 RP/min , however, only at 1500 RP/min the video card cooling system can be considered as quiet.

Due to the modernized radiator, the temperature conditions of Radeon HD 2900 Pro do not have any problems . Even in 2d operating mode the video card in the reduced frequencies functions on noisy 2100 r/min, but under load it switch to 2600 RP/min with 40 dB (1 meter). Quite operation ( 1500 RP/min ) result in too high temperature:
When the video card reached 100 degree Celsius the fan atomically maximally increased its frequency.
Now let us verify how cool is the Radeon HD 2900 Pro at the maximum rotation speed with ~4600 RP/min :
Temperatures in this case was reduced a lot .
Without cooling system replacement the video card HIS radeon 2900 Pro succeeded to overclock up to 790/2016 MHz:
I will recall that the frequencies Of radeon HD 2900 XT according to the monitoring data are 743/1656 MHz. Thus the tested today Radeon HD 2900 Pro with overclock noticeably overlaps the default frequencies of the XT version.

We attempted to replace the cooling system with the air cooler arctic cooling accelero S1. However, this attempt proved to be unsuccessful.
Since we where not able to test the radeon HD 2900 Pro with accelero S1 then we attempted to place Cooler master coolViva pro SE. The installation of this cooler past without any problems:
But here the temperature conditions Of radeon HD 2900 Pro even at the default frequencies proved to be noticeably higher than the reference cooler :
With overclock coolViva pro SE could not ensure stability.
3. Test configuration and testing procedure
We have used the following configuration to test all cards:
Disk ssystem: SATA- II 500 Gb, Samsung HD501LJ, 7200 rp/min, 16 mb., NCQ;
Power unit: Enermax galaxy EGA1000EWL 1000 watts (135- mm fan);
Monitor: 22 inch Samsung syncMaster 226BW (1680 x 1050, DVI, 60 Hz).
We have increased the Central processor voltage to 1.65 v in order to make a stable clock frequency equal to 3519 MHz:
In this case the operational memory functioned at 1173 MHz frequency with latency 5-5-5-9 and with voltage 2.15 v.
Besides those video card we used also BFG geForce 8600 GTS OS 256 mb with frequencies 720/2220 MHz, which was tested at frequencies 675/2000 MHz default for GeForce 8600 GTS and with the maximum overclock to 756/2340 MHz (with the aid of Arctic cooling accelero S1). The second video card is LeadTek geForce 8800 GTS 320 mb with the default frequencies 512/1584 MHz and maximum overclock to 621/1890 MHz.
DirectX 9 tests were executed in the operating system Windows XP professional edition SP2 (with last updates 01.09.07). Motherboard chipset Drivers - Intel chipset drivers version 8.4.0.1009a. We used directX 9.0c (release date August of 2007), and also video card drivers : Catalyst 7.9 for AMD radeon and ForceWare 163.71 for NVIDIA geForce. For DirectX 10 tests we use Windows vista ultimate edition (also with last updates).

4. Results of tests performance video card and their analysis

It is possible to play in Serious sam 2 With full screen smoothing, anisotropic filtration and HDR only using Radeon HD 2900 Pro and GeForce 8800 GTS . Moreover the first video card is inferior not only in average frame number , but also in its minimum value . Comfort in this game is only with GeForce 8800 GTS are better video card . However, due to the lower price of HD 2900 Pro the performance difference could be reexamined . As far as CrossFire system on base of two Radeon HD 2600 XT are concerned they can compete only with GeForce 8600 GTS.
F.E.A.R. Extraction point
In F.E.A.R game the Radeon HD 2900 Pro just lags behind the GeForce 8800 GTS 320 mb. . Their results are completely equal with overclock in the resolution 1280 X 960. The pair Of radeon HD 2600 XT in CrossFire regime demonstrates an amazing performance increase in the comparison with single video card; Actually, only radeon HD 2900 Pro and GeForce 8800 GTS allow a comfortable game play in more qualitative regimes:

The elder scrolls IV: Oblivion

The absence of crossFire support by this game and the weak results Of radeon HD 2900 Pro make us assume that catalyst drivers are not optimized under Tomb raider: Anniversary, or its engine simply do not benefit from the new graphic processors architecture .
Colin mcRae rally: DiRT
The Radeon HD 2900 Pro proved to be just faster than the more expensive GeForce 8800 GTS. the pair radeon HD 2600 XT is slower than Radeon HD 2900 Pro. Frame -rate in colin mcRae rally: DiRT game using the maximum quality setting are very low with video cards as Radeon HD 2900 Pro and GeForce 8800 GTS . Therefore there is no neeed for better quality test .
Now let us pass to DX10 game test. Since Radeon x1950 XT do support this api it will be removed from the list of tested card .
