Three week ago we published a review with some overclock stats for processor Pentium e2140 (we used three copy). This processor drew our attention , first , its cost is similar to new Celeron: This dual core processor cost $75. IN addition , it has a large overclocking capability , which exceeds 3 GHz. In other words, there are no doubts that Pentium e2140 is excellent choice for inexpensive system.
Now in our hands proved to the more expensive processor Pentium e2160, whose cost compose $85. For these additional 10 dollars, we obtain higher clock frequency (by 200 MHz), which from the first view in not so important for overclocker.

First , let us introduce the specifications of this processor.

All specifications, with exception of clock frequencies and cache volume (in the second level), repeat the characteristics of processors core 2 Duo with core allendale stepping L2, which is completely regular , since precisely this core make base Of Pentium e2160. In contrast to the budget processors celeron, new Pentium E21X0, although do not support the technology virtualization, But they possess the complete set of technologies switching based , including Enhanced intel speedstep.
We note that the lower cache volume did not decrease the heat emission. The processors Pentium E21X0 have the same TDP value , as processors core 2 Duo.
Here is the Traditional screen shot CPU- Z , witch completely confirms the data posted above in the table.
Pentium e2160 : 1 MB vs 2 MB vs 4 MB -- Core 2 Duo Cache dependency
After the appearance of processors Pentium e2000 , in the market we have three accessible model dual core CPU with micro-architecture core, characterized by the divided cache in the second level (volume 4, 2 and 1 Mbyte ). In this review , we will check the influence of L2 cache in various application. For this we compared the processor Pentium e2160 ( clock frequency 1.8 GHz and 1- mega-byte cache ) with Core 2 Duo e4300 (with 1.8 GHz frequency and L2 cache volume 2 Mbytes), and also with hypothetical processor core 2 Duo, which works at frequency 1.8 GHz with 4 MB cache. Since among Intel core 2 Duo there is no processor with 800Mhz system bus , for the tests we used the Core 2 Extreme x6800 with the lowered to 9x multiplier and the system bus frequency was set to 800 MHz. :-)
Tests were executed in the motherboard ASUS P5K deluxe (LGA775, Intel p35) with DDR 2-800 SDRAM and 2 Gb memory (Mushkin XP 2-6400PRO, 2 x 1024 MB, DDR 2-800, 4- 4- 4-12), graphic card powerColor x1900 XTX 512MB and hard disk : western digital WD1500AHFD.
On the graphs below we compared the performance of dual core processors with micro-architecture core, which work at frequency 1.8 GHz, 800Mhz system bus and with cache volume (L2 ) 1, 2 or 4 Mbytes.
Pentium e2160 : 1 MB vs 2 MB vs 4 MB -- Video , audio office ..
During video coding , the influence of cache size is noticeable . The difference in results between processors with 4- megabyte and 1 mega-byte cache compose 3-4%.
Similar result is observed during audio coding . But, here the difference reach 5%.
Microsoft office word 2007 loses in speed with decrease in second level cache volume . Moreover, if processor with 2 mega-byte cache is slower than its analog with 4MB cache by 5%, then with further cache reduction , performance loss reach 15-16% (1MB vs 4 MB).
Microsoft office excel 2007 also sensitively reacts to cache volume .
Here the picture repeat the result in tests Word 2007.
Adobe photo-shop CS3 do not relates to cache volume , all processor with different cache volume show similar performance.
In Adobe premiere pro 2.0 , difference in performance between processors with 4 and 2 Mbytes cache volume is practically null. However, with further decrease in cache volume ( to 1 Mbytes ) we observed immediately 5% speed drop .
The performance of sonar depends on cache volume but moderately. The difference between processor are in the limits of 5-6%.
Here the difference in speed does not exceed 3%.
Thus, the influence of cache size is manifested first in office applications. However, in the majority of tasks, connected with multimedia content , the importance of cache volume is not overestimated. In such programs with the selection of processor (micro-architecture core) using the maximum L2 volume , it is possible to obtain only small gain in performance , value reach only 3-5%.
Pentium e2160 : 1 MB vs 2 MB vs 4 MB -- Gaming performance
But what about gaming performance . here should we have a different result ???.
Actually, games sensitively react to processors cache volume . For this reason, the new processors series Pentium e2000 will be hardly named as good solution for gamer. Investment in more expensive Core 2 Duo, even series e4000 is completely justified for gamer.
Pentium e2160 vs Athlon 64 X2 3800+ :
As you see, using the micro-architecture core, the processors Pentium e2160 show completely different performance level , than their high end version core 2 Duo. Specifically, there for comparison , Pentium e2160 are analogous to AMD processor , as reference we used today the Athlon 64 X2 3800+. For this new cpu we used the mainboard ASUS M2N32-SLI deluxe (Socket AM2, NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI).
The obtained results are given in the table:

In the majority of real applications and tests , the new processor Pentium e2160 is faster than its competitor, Athlon 64 X2 3800+. However, picture radically changes, when discussion deal with games. WE note the strong drop in the performance (IN game) of processors with micro-architecture core, (due to its low cache volume ), witch make athlon 64 X2 3800+ faster in game .
Pentium e2160 Overclocking : 3.4 GHz ready ..!!
However, this still a bit early before the final conclusions . The low price of processors Pentium e2160 together with their micro-architecture core makes them completely interesting overclock object . According to our last review (where we checked 3 processor copy), those CPU can overclock to frequencies on the order of 3.2-3.4 GHz. As it was shown above, in the large number of tasks the cache size does not play determining role; therefore, being overclocked to such frequencies, new processors can demonstrate a completely worthy performance.
In order to confirm or to refute these assumptions, we decided to study the frequency potential of this processor. WE used in this case the air cooler zalman CMPS9700 LED.
Overclocking was performed by FSB frequency increase , the processor multiplier remained in regular state 9x. With increase in its supply voltage to 1.5 v we succeeded in increasing the FSB frequency to 378 MHz, which allowed to reach the frequency 3.4 GHz. In this state the processor was completely stable, This was checked with utilities SP2004/ORTHOS and OCCT.
Pentium e2160@ 3.4 Ghz vs Core 2 Extreme x6800:
This is good result, since the processor frequency with overclock was increased by 89% ( witch is higher than high end processor [core 2 Extreme] ) .
Tests were conducted in the configuration, described above.

The Advantage of the overclocked Pentium e2160 is clear in most case . Only in several tasks this processor loses over Core 2 Extreme x6800, witch possesses 4- mega-byte cache in the second level. This speaks, that the performance of contemporary top end processor, when desired, is possible to get also from CPU with price less than $100.
The result received from the overclocked Pentium e2160 can\'t be compared with processors athlon 64 X2 3600+ and Athlon 64 X2 3800+ . To test this overclocked processor with a worthy competitor we should use at least the 3 GHZ CPU athlon 64 X2 6000+, which in most case lose over core 2 Extreme x6800, So there is no sense to compare them , The overclocked e2160 is a lot faster
