One of the major drawbacks of any modern electric car is a limited amount of energy and, consequently, a relatively small distance, which can be overcome on a single charge. Some inventors offer the technology for fast charging batteries - car can quickly fill the batteries and spend more time on the road. However, such an approach is effective only if the entire route traffic meet regularly filling stations with a suitable outlet.
Israeli company offers Phinergy use aluminum-air fuel cells, which derive their energy from the chemical reaction of aluminum and atmospheric oxygen. Such cells are quite efficient, but widespread technology is not due to the high cost and complexity of the anodes with the removal of the by-products using conventional electrolytes.
Phinergy able to develop such an aluminum-air cell with an energy density of 300 W h / kg at the package level. In the future, the developers intend to increase the density of up to 1000 W h / kg and reduce the cost of the cells to below $ 100 per kW h For comparison, advanced lithium-ion batteries have a density of about 150-240 W h / kg at the cell level (and much lower than at the packet level) at a much higher cost.
As noted Phinergy, aluminum anode, which is part of the cell can produce enough energy to make the car drove about 30 kilometers. Thus, a package of 50 cells will last for more than 1,500 miles of carefree driving.
While Phinergy only demonstrate prototypes of its technology, the commercial use of aluminum-air cells since under question.
